These are proving to be brutal times for Honda sports car and racing fans, as Honda earlier announced plans to sell its once promising Formula 1 team.

What the production NSX was to have been like was based on rumor and speculation-Honda did a fine job of keeping details under wraps, as they typically do. While this news is disappointing, the NSX filled a very small niche. Honda is hurting in a global recession, just as most manufacturers are. While sales are down, Honda was prepared for the economic downturn, with small, handsome, solid performers like the new Fit and the Civic. These cars are the focus of Honda currently, as well as the upcoming Insight hybrid.

Production of the last generation NSX ended in 2005, so it’s not as if Honda was feeling forced to rush a new NSX into production anyways. Hoping to leave behind the disappoint that was the Smart Roadster, Abarth’s new Roadster model will feature an all new design, a transverse, mid-engined layout similar to that of the Lotus Elise. There are previous suggest reports suggesting the future Abarth model will share the chassis with the KTM X-Bow, but that is still under discussion. The car’s exterior design will be inspired by Abarth models of the 1960s.

Under the hood there will be the recently launched turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir, available with outputs as high as 170bhp. The engine will be mated to a new six-speed, dual-clutch gearbox, but a seven-speed version is also a possibility for the future.

Expect the new Abarth Roadster to debut in 2012, priced at around £25,000 (aprox. $40,000 at the current exchange rates). Abarth expects to produce a total of 5,000 units to sell worldwide.

The Gen 7 Celica was introduced in 2000 and was a completely new vehicle. This new version of the marque is almost certainly the last as Toyota have said they have no plans to extend the model line. To the dismay of many devotees, there was no Gen 7 GT4 version. This omission was probably due to the fact that Toyota seemed to have no plan to get back into the Rallying world. Having said that though, the Gen 7 Celica still handled particularly well due to it's excellent chassis.

The 190 brake horse power delivers a performance that's and flexible.

At launch, only the 1ZZ-FE VVTi engine, producing around 140bhp, was available. This was much less than the 2.0 litre 3S-GE in earlier cars. Although seen as underpowered, the Generation 7 was resaonably quick and delivered a far better fuel economy than earlier cars.

Toyota and Yamaha combined to produce the 190bhp 2ZZ-GE engine and this was offered in later models of the Gen 7. The Variable Vale Lift engines supplied much more fuel and air to the engine when the revs counter went above a certain limit. This gave the Celica a completely new lease of life and a very distinctive characteristic; up to the point where the variable lift occured, the car was very similar to the VVTi models, but above that an extra 40bhp became available, and the sound of those extra horses was a deligfht to Gen 7 owners.

Toyota announced the discontinuation of both the MR2 and Celica in July 2004, however, the supply of pre-owned cars is still plentiful.

It’s hard to find fault with the basic premise of a Corvette Z06, but designers simply took the best of the production car while adding features to help it ’round a road course. The Z06X concept is built upon a production 2011 Z06 fitted with both the vaulted Z07 performance package and the CFZ Carbon Fiber option group.

From there, GM added a low-restriction air intake, along with a heavy-duty radiator and an improved cooling system. Engineers also tinkered with the suspension setup, adding mono-ball control arm bushings, adjustable stabilizer bars, and coil-over struts with adjustable camber plates. Brembo carbon-ceramic brake rotors are part of the stock Z07 package, but lightweight racing wheels, finished in a dark hue and capped with Michelin racing rubber, are unique to the Z06X.

That black finish ties well with the Z06X’s exterior design. Although all body parts are essentially stock, GM painted the car in a Icy White Metallic color, adding a black racing stripe and rear fascia, along with red accents. Chevrolet’s Camaro SS X concept abides by the same formula applied to the Z06X, although a few extra modifications were required to help turn the bulky muscle machine into a satisfying road racer.

Outside, the SS X shares the Z06X’s design theme, sporting the same black-on-white paint scheme as its fiberglass-bodied relative. In a move to strip weight, GM replaced the hood, fenders, doors, and deck lid with panels fabricated from carbon fiber. For aerodynamic purposes, a carbon fiber front splitter, rocker panels, and adjustable rear wing were also added to the package.

Underhood, the SS X retains the Camaro’s stock 6.2-liter LS3 V-8, although it’s been massaged with a new camshaft, revised cylinder heads, and a dry-sump oil system. The six-speed transmission is stock Getrag fare, although it is fitted with a twin-disc clutch raided from the Corvette ZR1 parts bin. 20-inch wheels and racing tires are added, and are stopped courtesy of an upgraded four-wheel-brake system, which includes six-piston front calipers, four-piston rear calipers, and slotted rotors at each corner.

As is the case with the Z06X, the Camaro SS X’s interior isn’t exactly conducive for commuting. Carpeting, insulation, interior trim, and other parts — including the rear seat — have been gutted to shave weight and make room for some serious racing hardware. An SCCA-spec roll cage, window net, race seat, and five-point harness are added, along with racing pedals, a fire suppression system, and fuel cell.
